Bonded Sealing Washer
Bonded sealing washer designed for use as connector seals in hydraulic equipment, bonded seals (commonly known as Dowty Seals or Dowty Washers) are used across a broad range of applications including fluid systems in power generation, aviation and defence and general industrial applications.
A bonded sealing washer consists of a metal outer ring with an inner ring of rubber, which acts as a gasket and provides a sealing function.
Materials of construction
Both the metal and rubber materials can be specified in a variety of options to match the operating conditions of the application.
The metal washer is commonly available in mild steel, stainless steel, copper ,and aluminium bronze, but can also be produced in other material grades to meet specific customer requirements.
The rubber sealing insert is available in nitrile (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile (HNBR), fluoroelastomer (FKM) and ethylene propylene diene (EPDM) elastomers. Rubbers with low compression set are preferable to provide a consistent, effective seal requiring no interim tightening even when subject to vibration or heat cycling.
Product parameters and applications
Performance
Max temperature:+200°C (+392°F)
Min temperature: -40°C (-40°F)
Performance parameters are dependent on materials of construction
Sizes
BSP – 1/8″ to 2″
Metric – M5 to M60
German, French and CETOP (ISO1179) sizing options also available
Applications
Hydraulic Systems: They create leak-proof seals around bolts and screws, ensuring fluid containment.
The metal washer provides structural support and prevents over-compression of the rubber sealing element, while the rubber creates a tight seal against the mating surfaces absorbing vibrations and reducing the chances of loosening or failure due to dynamic movements.
Product FAQ
What are Bonded sealing washers used for?
Bonded sealing washers are primarily used to create leak-proof seals in hydraulic systems, automotive applications, and more. They effectively prevent fluid leaks around bolts and screws.
How do Bonded sealing washers work?
They work by compressing the rubber ring between the metal washer and the mating surface when tightened, forming a tight seal that adapts to surface variations.
What materials are used in Bonded sealing washers?
They typically consist of a metal washer, often steel or stainless steel, and a rubber sealing element, commonly made from nitrile or other elastomers.
What is the difference between standard and self-centering Bonded sealing washers?
Standard bonded sealing washers may require precise alignment during installation, while self-centering washers are designed to eliminate offset, simplifying the installation process.
Can Bonded sealing washers be customized?
Yes, Bonded sealing washers can be customized in size and material to meet specific application requirements.
What temperature ranges do Bonded sealing washers operate in?
Most Bonded sealing washers can operate effectively in temperatures ranging from -40°C to 120°C, with some types rated for higher temperatures.
Are Bonded sealing washers suitable for high-pressure applications?
Yes, Bonded sealing washers are specifically designed to handle high-pressure environments, making them ideal for hydraulic systems and other demanding applications.
How do I know which size Bonded sealing washer to choose?
The size of the Bonded sealing washers should match the size of the pipe thread or bolt it will be used with. Consult the manufacturer’s specifications for guidance.
